Gamboa’s co-promoter calls bullsh*t on Roger Mayweather’s latest claims

During a recent visit the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, I again crossed paths with outspoken trainer and former champion Roger Mayweather.
During my time covering the game in Vegas, Roger and I have had our share of talks and while nothing from him has come to surprise me, I find a particular sound bite from him rather peculiar.
Earlier this month, Cuban marvel and the man regarded as the world’s best featherweight, Yuriorkis Gamboa, was spotted at the gym and would late hang out with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his team.
Asked for his thoughts on Gamboa’s cameo at the facility, Roger claimed that he had been hearing whispers of Mayweather Jr., his nephew and prized charge, getting ready to add the star fighter to his stable of fighters under his Mayweather Promotions banner.
“He was with my nephew,” Roger would say of Gamboa. “He signed with my nephew. My nephew is going to promote him I guess. All I know is that he said he’s with my nephew.”
These words from Uncle Roger have apparently ruffled the feathers of Ahmet Öner, who co-promotes Gamboa along with Top Rank. Speaking to my colleague Jake Donovan at BoxingScene.com, Öner sounded off on the rumors.
“It’s bullsh*t,” Öner said. “Gamboa has a contract with Top Rank and me. Don’t pull me in the mix like that and try to create problems with Top Rank. Yuri respects his contract with Top Rank.”
The German promoter spends much of his time in America and plans on discussing this matter with Gamboa the next time they meet.
“I live in the United States and do a lot of work out here. If you don’t know who I am, Google my name. When I see them, I will ask them why this was started. I don’t like to hear [stuff] like this.”
This matter will soon be on the backburner, however, as it was recently announced that Gamboa is lined up for an April 14th blockbuster with former lightweight champion Brandon Rios, set to take place at the Mandalay Bay.
